ISO 14064 Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Removals
[ ISO 14064 Introduction ]
An increasing number of organizations are voluntarily monitoring and reporting greenhouse gas emissions and managing carbon emissions more efficiently.
ISO 14064 provides a framework for estimating and verifying greenhouse gas emissions for organizations seeking to quantify and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
Part 1 - Organization-level guidance for the quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and removals.
It specifies organizational-level principles and requirements for the quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals. This includes requirements for the design, development, management, reporting and validation of an organization's GHG inventory.
Part 2 - Project-level guidance for the quantification, monitoring, and reporting of improvements in greenhouse gas emissions reduction or elimination.
It specifies principles and requirements and provides project-level guidance for the quantification, monitoring, and reporting of activities that seek to increase reduction or elimination of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
This includes requirements for GHG project planning, identification, and selection of GHG sources, sinks and reservoirs (SSRs) related to the project and baseline scenarios, monitoring, quantification, documentation and reporting of GHG project performance, and data quality management.
Part 3 - Guidelines for validation and verification of greenhouse gas statements.
It specifies principles and requirements and provides guidance for verifying and validating greenhouse gas (GHG) statements. Applies to organizations, projects, and products GHG statements.
[ Importance of ISO 14064 Certification ]
- 1. GHG risk management and identification of opportunities for reduction A company can establish a comprehensive GHG inventory to understand the company's GHG emissions status, responsibilities, and risks. At the same time, it can help businesses find the most cost-effective reduction opportunities through estimating and accounting of their greenhouse gas emissions.
- 2. Improve energy and material efficiency and reduce operating costs. By developing new products and services, you can reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of your customers or suppliers.
- 3. Building a Good Image of Social Responsibility: With growing interest in climate change, more and more non-governmental organizations, investors, or other stakeholders are asking businesses to disclose more information about their greenhouse gas emissions. Disclosure of a company's GHG emissions information can strengthen good relationships with stakeholders and build a corporate image of 'social responsibility and environmental management' to customers and the public.
- 4. Participate in the Greenhouse Gas Emission Trading Market: In recent years, some regions have begun to implement methods using market mechanisms to offset greenhouse gas emissions. These trading plans require more realistic emissions and set emission targets or caps to decide whether to buy or sell allowances, and usually only require direct emission estimates. At the same time, to support independent inspections, these emission trading systems require participating companies to establish traceability for verification of reported greenhouse gas information.
[ Scope of ISO 14064 ]
- • Enterprise risk management: identifying and managing opportunities and risks, etc.
- • Voluntary Actions: Activities such as participating in voluntary GHG registration or reporting actions.
- • GHG Markets: Buying and selling of GHG quotas and credits
- • Laws and regulations or government departments require reporting such as obtaining credit lines due to proactive measures, negotiated contracts, or national reporting systems.
