ISO 50001 is an energy management system operation standard first established in 2011 by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It presents the technical and management aspects that can systematically and continuously promote the organization's energy efficiency improvement activities.
Organizations enable systematic energy management by establishing systems and processes necessary to improve energy performance, including energy efficiency and consumption, thereby contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, energy costs, and other related environmental impacts.
This standard is applicable to many types of organizations, regardless of local, cultural and social conditions, and the type and usage of energy. This not only contributes to the organization's economic benefits through efficient energy use, but also guarantees the company's active activities in ESG (Environment, Social, Governance), a key element for sustainable management, which is rapidly emerging as a global topic.
Problems such as the spread of COVID-19, the outbreak of the Ukraine crisis, the outbreak of China, and the supply of raw materials for production are affecting many countries and companies in various fields such as politics and economy, countries are making various efforts to restore it.
Accordingly, in the world, sustainable management and ESG activities are becoming more common in order to minimize the damage caused by the occurrence of these variables in advance. Therefore, the importance of non-financial values such as carbon neutrality (Net Zero), environmental protection activities to overcome climate crises such as conversion to new and renewable energy, personal information management, and anti-corruption ethical management is emerging.
ESG regulations, which are increasingly and fast tightening, are not an option, but a necessary condition. So part of ESG activities, the company is implementing operation methods such as using eco-friendly raw materials for the environment, recycling waste materials, and opening new departments to comply with social responsibility.
This will gradually spread to many companies depending on their energy policies and stable energy sources, and the establishment of a company's systematic energy management system through this standard will help to continuously improve energy performance, control risk and ESG activities.
